He completed his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples acquiring a classical setting. Then he moved to Rome under the leadership of V. Camuccini and was later active in particular between the two cities.
He painted portraits, allegorical compositions, religious subjects (Death of St Andrew Avellino of 1836, preserved in Naples, church of San Francesco di Paola), but also genre subjects and works of history celebratory genus belongs to the latter perhaps his most popular: the gypsy Picenate predicts the rise of the papacy Sixtus V in 1845, Caserta, Royal Palace).
Painter of the Bourbon court, but also narrator of Italian popular everyday life in the mid-nineteenth century, before and after the Unification, he starts from classicism to arrive at a moderate realism in anecdotal works.
At auction, his prices start from 160 euros for engravings on paper, up to more complex and genre-specific canvases, with prices around 4,000/5,000 euros. The auction record of 145,904 euros was achieved in 2003 for an Allegory of America.
