Licinio Barzanti

( Forlì 1857 - Como 1944 )

Painter

    Licinio Barzanti

Licinio Barzanti was born in Forlì in 1857, but at a very young age he moved to Florence where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. Here he came into contact with the post-Macchiaioli painters who then influenced his pictorial language, although his training was purely self-taught, spending hours and hours painting figures, objects and landscapes from life.

    Between verist tendencies and tradition

His works, especially his floral compositions and landscape painting, mix realist tendencies with the Forlì classicist painting tradition. Especially in the views, the artist uses a synthetic and vaporous stroke that focuses on the power of nature and the rendering of light refractions. Especially beautiful are the seascapes in which he experiments with different nuances of blue to record the impetuous force of the sea and the atmospheric variation of light.

    Landscape painting

From an exhibition point of view, he took part in various Italian and foreign cultural exhibitions: in 1888, his presence at London exhibitions is attested; in 1904, he took part in the Florence Exhibition with Tuscan Spring; in 1914, he presented Studio di Paese at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan; and in 1917, his work Sheep on the Lake appeared in the exhibition of the collection of Cavaliere Alfredo Conti in the Lombard capital.

In 1924, the painter took part in the exhibition of the Lombard Art Association held at the Galleria Pesaro Milan with Orta – Strada rasente il lago; in 1930 he exhibited two works at the Galleria Ciardiello in Florence, Bosco con ruscello and Gattici; and in 1940 he presented Frutta at the Galleria Guglielmi in Milan.

He was then particularly appreciated in Russia where several of his works are kept.

    Still Life Specialist

The artist specialised above all in floral still lifes, colourful vases of flowers, realised through a nuanced and delicate chromatism, with gentle tones and romantic atmospheres.

The brushstroke is dense and rich in matter, breaking up and breaking down the objects represented on different planes, thus registering the vibrations of light and life that shine on them.

The painter died in Como in 1944, at the age of eighty-seven.
