Andrea Appiani Junior
Andrea Appiani Junior, nephew of the famous neoclassical painter of the same name and one of the most important heirs of Francesco Hayez’s Romantic lexicon, was a history and portrait painter active in the first half of the Italian 19th century. He trained in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca, from 1833 to 1837, where he followed the courses of the purist painter Tommaso Minardi. His works have been auctioned 13 times, mainly in the category Painting.
The auction record for a romantic female portrait is € 6,000, but portraits or history paintings of particular commitment and suggestiveness can also achieve much higher prices.
Appiani the younger’s auspicious beginnings allowed him to be appreciated by wealthier patrons and more experienced collectors. Ferdinand I commissioned the subject Ruth and Booz from him in 1840 for his Belvedere Gallery in Vienna.
Between Romanticism and history painting, he achieved success among collectors and critics, attracted above all by his versatility and skill in the portrait genre.
The site is constantly updated with unpublished works by the protagonists of painting and sculpture between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
