Anatolio Scifoni
Anatolio Scifoni was born in Florence in 1842 and perfected his skills by spending periods between Rome and Paris. He moved definitively to the Eternal City in 1870, after the Breach of Porta Pia.
His first activity took place between history and genre painting, but Scifoni is best known for his impeccable neo-Pompeian production. These are the most popular subjects on the market and have a price range starting from a minimum of €1,300 for tablets with figures in orientalist settings, up to an auction record of €141,056 in 2007 for a large, perfectly finished canvas with a neo-Pompeian subject, the artist’s masterpiece.
It was in Rome that he began to devote himself to subjects with gynaeceums, baths, gardens, then scenes in Roman or Greek settings, studying the details with extreme attention, from a philological and archaeological point of view. This historical truthfulness is also due to a stay in Pompeii to deepen his knowledge of ancient culture, observing a domus in person and copying some frescoes that he then inserts in his works through a delicate and luminous chromatism.
The artist achieved considerable success and some of his paintings such as Tiepidarium of the Baths of Pompeii were bought by English and American merchants, but especially by the French merchant Adolphe Goupil.
The site is constantly updated with unpublished works by the protagonists of painting and sculpture between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
