Ulvi Liegi
Ulvi Liegi, pseudonym of Luigi Levi, was born in Livorno in 1858 into a wealthy family of Jewish origin.
In Florence, he came into contact with Macchiaioli painting, forming a friendship with Telemaco Signorini who invited him to abandon his academic studies to devote himself to the study of life following Silvestro Lega’s lesson. He was also greatly influenced by Giovanni Fattori’s painting, tying himself to his figure and dedicating his production to landscapes, including seascapes and rural scenes.
In 1886, he left for Paris where he met Federico Zandomeneghi and the Parisian cultural milieu that directed him towards a European language that brought him closer to Impressionism. He approached the painting of Edgar Degas, Camille Pisarro and Alfred Sisley. He increasingly used a consistent and dense brushstroke; and his palette became bright and lively, combining the Macchiaioli language with Impressionism, paying great attention to light.
In the 20th century, he joined the Gruppo Labronico in Livorno, again following in the footsteps of Giovanni Fattori’s verista painting.
Ulvi Liegi’s works dedicated to the Tuscan countryside of good size range from EUR 5,000 to EUR 20,000 depending on the subject and commitment. Higher sums were achieved by canvases with figures set in urban settings in Tuscany, between Florence and Livorno. Smaller paintings do not exceed 3,000 euro. The auction record in 2006 was 80,000 for a painting of Ponte Vecchio in Florence.
The site is constantly updated with unpublished works by the protagonists of painting and sculpture between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
