Angelo Cantù
Angelo Cantù was born in Milan in 1881 and began his artistic career by attending courses at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts under Cesare Tallone, a well-known portrait painter who in fact initiated him into this pictorial genre, but also into painting from life.
The Milanese artist took part in various cultural exhibitions, active in landscape and portrait painting. With regard to portraiture, the echoes of Tallone’s painting are evident; in landscape painting, on the other hand, he observes Lorenzo Delleani’s technique, Antonio Fontanesi’s dreamy atmospheres and Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo’s pre-Divisionist landscapes.
Seldom seen at auctions, he starts at a minimum of EUR 100 for small, late oil paintings with portraits, to reach an auction record of EUR 3490 for a luminous, almost Sorrollian painting with many figures of boys on the beach.
The site is constantly updated with unpublished works by the protagonists of painting and sculpture between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
