Manuel Carrera

Manuel Carrera teaches contemporary art history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara. He is an art historian specialising in Italian painting between the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular reference to artists of the Secession and the Roman School. He has devoted important studies to the painter Antonio Mancini, also curating two exhibitions dedicated to the relationship and comparison between his painting and the sculpture of Vincenzo Gemito.

He is the author of numerous articles and scientific essays and has curated exhibitions in museums and galleries in Italy and abroad. He graduated in contemporary art history from the Sapienza University of Rome with a thesis on Antonio Mancini’s stay in England and his relationship with John Singer Sargent. At the same university, he obtained his PhD in art history with a thesis on the artistic exchange between British and Italian portrait painters in the 19th and 20th centuries. Between 2014 and 2023, he directed the Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Anticoli Corrado. Since 2019, he has been the scientific director of the Fausto Pirandello Foundation. In the same year, he joined the scientific committee of the Emanuele Cavalli Association.
