Romeo Costetti
Romeo Costetti was born in 1871 in Reggio Emilia and was the older brother of the well-known painter Giovanni Costetti. He moved with his family to Bologna when he was very young and attended the Academy of Fine Arts there, where his first training took place. He then attended Domenico Morelli’s drawing course in 1886 in Naples. He embarked on numerous trips to various European cities, until he settled in Paris where he came into contact with the avant-garde and updated his artistic language, especially in a Symbolist key.
The artist is very close to Nordic symbolism, describing quiet and rarefied atmospheres pervaded by allegorical and enigmatic meanings. Often the protagonists are concealed by carnivalesque masks that further increase this sense of mystery.
In the 1920s, the painter shifted his focus to the world of work, observing and narrating life in the Po Valley. The animalier production is also very important, especially the engravings.
At auctions, the painter’s prices ranged from 200 euros for etchings depicting animals, with a symbolist flavour, to monotypes of masked figures at around 2,000/4,000 euros, to reach an auction record of 9,500 euros for the painting Signore al caffè of 1908
