Pasquale Celommi
Pasquale Celommi was born in 1851 in Montepagano, a hamlet of Roseto degli Abruzzi, into a family of fishermen. He was therefore immediately directed towards the fishing trade, but as a child he showed marked drawing and observational skills.
He made his debut in 1880 at the Promotrice di Torino with Vecchio (Abruzzese half-figure) and Odalisca, proving to be a careful interpreter of Abruzzese traditions and customs. His painting is indeed close, especially in the choice of folkloristic subjects, to the research of his fellow countryman Francesco Paolo Michetti. His subjects are sailors, fishmongers, fishermen, humble workers rendered with vivid colours and a luminous brushstroke.
Although the artist remained living in Roseto degli Abruzzi, he obtained critical and public acclaim and his paintings were also appreciated on the foreign market, especially by Anglo-Saxon dealers.
Pasquale Celommi’s large oils on canvas dedicated to the folk traditions of Abruzzo fetch prices between EUR 4,000 and around EUR 11,000. Higher sums for the particularly large marine paintings of Roseto degli Abruzzi with figures. The small plates fluctuate between 1,000 and 3,000 euro.
