Johann Evangelist Scheffer von Leonhardshoff, Austrian painter and graphic artist and member of the Nazarenes group, was born in Vienna in 1795. His training took place at the Academy in the Austrian capital.
In 1814 he won a scholarship that led him to Rome. In the Urbe, he came into contact with the Nazarene painters, abandoning academic painting, and approaching their stylistic features, preferring sacred themes inspired by Perugino, Michelangelo and especially Raphael.
His painter friends gave him the nickname “Raphael,” highlighting him for the remarkable copies he made of the Urbino master.
In 1815 he was accepted as a member of the confraternity called the League of St. Luke linked to the Nazarenes, adhering to their intent to remain always faithful to the Truth, and to fight the academic manner.
Johann Evangelist Scheffer von Leonhardshoff devoted himself to painting of a Christian and religious nature, which he intensified during his stay as a student in Italy. His closeness to the Nazarenes is demonstrated in both style and subject matter by depicting cycles from the lives of saints or the stories of Jesus and Mary.
Artist not very frequent at auction. Drawings range in price from €440 up to €4,000, while one painting reached an auction record of €36,000.
