Francesco Trecourt

Francesco Trecourt was probably born in Bergamo in 1811 and trained there, attending the Accademia di Carrara. In 1839, he appeared among the names of the student exhibitors at the exhibition organized by the Accademia di Carrara in Bergamo, presenting Un paese, copia da un originale del Canella (A Village, copy from an original by Canella); Atrio di una casa, studio dal vero (Atrium of a house, study from life), Veduta della Piazza nuova in Bergamo (View of the new square in Bergamo), and Simile della Caserma di Sant’Agostino in Bergamo (Similar to the Barracks of Sant’Agostino in Bergamo).

From the outset, his attention to landscape painting and study from life was evident.

The painting Scena storica (Historical scene), created in 1831, also belongs to his formative period.

He then moved to Pavia, where he was active from 1842 until his death in 1887, at the age of 76.

Francesco Trecourt is one of the few artists to have immortalized the Monastery of San Paolo near Pavia in 1849, before its destruction in 1856, leaving us an important testimony to the history of the place.

Another well-known painting by him is La Contessa Clementina nel porto di Pavia (Countess Clementina in the Port of Pavia), a canvas depicting the historic boat that operated on the Pavia-Venice route between 1844 and 1859. This work, preserved in the museum collections of the Civica Scuola di Pittura di Pavia, dates back to the 1850s. The painter’s style is strongly influenced by the lively descriptivism of the landscape painter Giuseppe Canella, who fascinated him from the very beginning.
