    Francesco Diofebi

    Francesco Diofebi (Narni, Terni 1781 – Rome 1851) soon came to Rome from his native Umbria already around 1800. Here you said with a kind of production dedicated to the depiction of popular life and at the same time with paintings depicting the picturesque views of ancient Rome.

    For these abilities was called to decorate the Palazzo Torlonia already Piazza Venezia and at the same time was appreciated by the famous sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen that he collected his works, now preserved at the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen.

    Also in the same year he participated actively in the exposure of the Company Amateurs and Connoisseurs of Fine Arts with works such as Leftover an ancient porch, appointed by Octavia, presently used at the fish market, exhibited in 1832.

    This painting depicts a visit to the Vatican loggias of an elegant couple at the center of the representation, while the sides of a child playing with a dog and a cardinal minute is set to make his entrance on the scene. In the background one can see the so-called Spina di Borgo, then razed in 1936 to make way for the path of conciliation.

    The narrow stylistic Accessory parts with known works by Francesco Diofebi, such as the Church of St. Paul outside the walls after the fire (Rome, Museo di Palazzo Braschi), or the discovery of the tomb of Raphael (Copenhagen, Thorvaldsen Museum), let attribuirel ‘work of the Umbrian master Berardi gallery with some confidence.
