Compì la sua formazione sotto la guida di E. Allason. Espose la sua prima opera, “Rimembranze”, alla Promotrice di Torino nel 1860, e a questa fece seguire: “Il Medrio” e “Pesca sul Tanaro”, nel 1861; “Mattino ad Oropa”, nel 1864; “Chi dorme non piglia pesci” e “Le braje ‘d tejla”, nel 1866; “Pan e sudor”, nel 1867; “Un mattino a Bordighera”, nel 1868; “La Primavera”, nel 1870; “Mattino d’aprile”, nel 1872; “Presso Bussolino”, nel 1873; “Bufera imminente”, nel 1876; “Torino”, nel 1877. Partecipò inoltre a varie esposizioni di Napoli, di Venezia e di Milano. Carlo Felice Biscarra nel 1869 scriveva del Ghisolfi: «E’ uno dei giovani artisti che sentono nobilmente la dignità dell’arte»; «ci mostra quanto sappia apprezzare il seguente dettato dell’eccellente critico Arsène Hous saye, diretto agli atei in arte: Si vous voulez traduire par la palette ou par le ciseau le splendeur du vrai ne commencez pas par nier votre ame».
