His family was noble and therefore he never bothered to sell his art. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples following the courses of his friend Domenico Morelli. He soon moved away from Morellian poetics and conventional landscape painting to approach the poetics of the Resina school, arriving at a very fine painting, alien to any intervention of the anecdotal genre.
