He was a pupil of his father Charles, one of the first realists who fought the Roman countryside to paint from life. The programmatic Oxen dragging a block of marble at the Villa Medici (Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery) dated 1872 already reveals the aspirations of surveys on life in the Roman. Following Coleman was inserted fully into the artistic life in Rome: International Artistic Association exposed to the exhibitions of the Society of Watercolourists and also to Connoisseurs and Amateurs. Afterwards came also to Nino Costa participating in the positions of the In Arte Libertas.
Its production is quite large thanks to the endless series of watercolors, often iterated with slight variations, which achieved some success with the public. Among his works include: Un giro nel podere (maremma toscana), Escursione al monte Sempreviso, Inondazione nella Campagna Romana, Ponte Santa Maria a Leonessa, Sul Gran Sasso d’Italia e Frascati Il Tusculum.
