Carl Larsson
Carl Larsonn was born in Stockholm in 1853 into a family of humble origins, but in 1866 he was admitted to the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm.
He worked for a few years as an illustrator for newspapers and books, then in 1880 he stayed in Paris without much success. In 1882, however, he moved to the Scandinavian artists’ colony in Grez-zur-Loing, just outside Paris, where he met the artist Karin Bergöö, whom he married the following year. During this period, he decided to abandon oil painting to experiment with the watercolour technique that would make him better known.
In 1888, he returned to Sweden, moving to the small village of Sunborn, in the municipality of Falun. The newlyweds decorated their home in a very special and personal way, becoming the setting for numerous works by the painter. It is not unusual for Larsson to illustrate his children’s games and intimate everyday moments with great delicacy, as in Christmas Morning. Carl Larsson tries to infuse his watercolours with the beauty of a simple life, full of love, affection and unbreakable bonds.
Very frequent at auctions, he has achieved very high figures for his canvases dedicated to domestic intimacy: in fact, the record has reached EUR 1 million, while the average for his watercolours is between EUR 50,000 and EUR 100,000 and more.
The site is constantly updated with unpublished works by the protagonists of painting and sculpture between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
