Student at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Barcelona, Antonio Fabrés y Costa is one of the most important Spanish artists of the century. In 1875 he won a scholarship to go to Rome, where he studied painting and appreciates Mariano Fortuny, who died the previous year. In the eternal city specializes in historical subjects and oriental treated with a precious style and vigorously realistic.
Achieved international success thanks to the mediation of the influential dealer Adolphe Goupil, in 1892 he moved to Paris, where he met for the Universal Exhibition of 1900, the sculptor Jesús Contrera, commissioned by the Mexican government in Europe to find a teacher for the class painting of the Academy of fine Arts San Carlos. For five years, between 1902 and 1905, Fabrés teaches and lives in Mexico City participating in the renewal in the direction of local realist painting.
Certainly the most elaborate work carried out by Mexican Fabrés during your stay is the painting depicting Silia Chrysis and daughter in prison, which is its rightful place in history painting declined in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries neopompeian genre, characterized by a faithful reconstruction archaeologically interior of everyday objects and clothing.
