Andrea Fossati was part of the Scapigliatura movement, a contemporary Italian art movement of French Impressionism reprising the bright colors and the technique fast and smart. Unlike the French the Italian movement was inspired by different subjects for compositions: Fossati like other protagonists of Scapiglitura – by Tranquillo Cremona to Daniel Ranzoni – preferred to be inspired by historical scenes set in the Renaissance. In this environment may well be added to the painting Paggio be identified with the work submitted in 1871 at the National Exhibition of Milan, a splendid example of the painting Fossati for the palette from the cool tones and vibrant and fascinating historical subject.
