Ambrogio Borghi
Ambrogio Borghi was born in Nova Milanese, a town in the province of Monza, in 1848.
He trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts under the neoclassical sculptor Giovanni Strazza. Right from the start, he demonstrated skilful technical qualities and received various recognitions and awards. He soon achieved success, so much so that in 1878 he participated in the 3rd Universal Exhibition in Paris, where his Chioma di Berenice caused great surprise and amazement among critics and public alike. The work depicts Berenice II, an Egyptian ruler and wife of Ptolemy III, who decides to cut off her hair as a vow to Aphrodite.
His boldly posed sculptures in marble have quotations starting at a minimum of €12,000 for genre subjects, even large ones, up to a 2011 auction record of almost €230,000 for the famous Berenice’s Hair over two metres high.
The site is constantly updated with unpublished works by the protagonists of painting and sculpture between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
