Achille Della Bitta
A Roman sculptor, born in Rome in 1832, he studied with his father and when he was still a young man he won a competition and was awarded a gold medal, presenting a group: “Minerva stopping Mars, when the latter wants to avenge the death of Patroclus”.
He later made many busts, portraits and funerary monuments and among the various works he did we can mention: “The bust of Giuditta Tavani” which is in the house where the Tavani family was slaughtered in Rome, the “Bust of Piero Cironi”, which was erected in Prato in honour of this patriot and writer, and many decorations and works of minor importance.
Della Bitta was condemned to exile by the papal government for his patriotic aspirations, he was with Garibaldi in various campaigns and took an active part in the unification and independence of his country.
