As part of the exhibition Nineteenth-Century Artists – Themes and Rediscoveries, the two rooms on the third floor of the Gallery will host a concise but significant exhibition dedicated to the Roman painter Arturo Noci (Rome 1874 – New York 1953), from his debut to his move to the United States in 1923. The selected works are among the most beautiful figure paintings the artist ever produced.
A nineteenth-century artist and leading representative of Roman Divisionism, Noci, after an initial interest in symbolist landscapes, increasingly focused on the figure, particularly the female image, of which he became one of the most refined interpreters.
Through works and documents from private Roman collections and two masterpieces from the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, L’arancio and Ritratto della contessa Gianotti, Noci emerges as one of the leading figure painters and most sought-after portraitists in Rome during the Belle Époque. Favoured by his good looks and innate elegance, Arturo Noci entered the social circuit at the beginning of the century, which consisted of lavish parties held in fashionable salons and animated by personalities such as Gabriele D’Annunzio.
These were the years in which he received important commissions from the local aristocracy and the world of entertainment. Particularly striking are the portraits on display of three silent film stars, including the great and important Portrait of Lyda Borelli, which was a huge success at the Venice Biennale in 1914 and at the Universal Exposition in San Francisco the following year.
